FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15TH-19TH  OUR LEARNING GOALS WILL BE…..

Reading:

I can ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of the text. 




 * Students are writing a WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY or HOW question before, during and after they read on sticky notes or an index card.  When students find an answer to their question, they're check marking by the question and putting the page number where they found the answer

PLEASE READ--->>>>>Successful reading is not simply the mechanical process of "decoding" text. Rather, it is a process of active inquiry. Good readers approach a text with questions and develop new questions as they read, for example:
"What is this story about?"
"What does the main character want?"
"Will she get it?" "If so, how?"
Even after reading, engaged readers still ask questions:
"What is the meaning of what I have read?"
"Why did the author end the paragraph (or chapter, or book) in this way?"
"What was the author's purpose in writing this?"

****Your child is to be practicing this skill with his/her library book and logging the question with the answer on his/her reading log or in his/her READING ROOM online :-)


I can describe the overall structure of the story, describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action of the chapter or story.




Ending of Chapter 16 in Charlotte's Web:   
Wilbur never forgot Charlotte. Although he loved her children and grandchildren dearly, none of the new spiders quite took her place in his heart. She was in a class by herself. It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.
* Students can picture from details in their mind what is going on and can summarize it on their own*


In writing,  we're also learning to use our senses to come up with a great new scene for Charlotte's web for the beginning of another chapter.  ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE CHARACTER THEY CREATED FOR CHARLOTTE'S WEB AND HOW THE CHARACTER IS GOING TO MAKE WILBUR FEEL LESS LONELY?

I can use information gained from the illustrations and words in print to demonstrate understanding of the characters, setting and plot. 

*Students are using their 5 senses and writing what they know is going on and what could be going on based on the illustrations to gain a better understanding of the story!!


Math


I can use repeated patterns to count and represent numbers.
·       I can read and write numbers up to 1,000 using different forms.
·       I can tell how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in a given number.
·       I can represent a number up to 1,000 in a variety of ways.
.    I can skip –count by 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s




We know that 10 tens= 100.   
We're grouping out tens into groups of tens to represent hundreds.  We know any leftover numbers would be part of our tens place :-)

We will be learning a variety of ways to write our hundreds, tens and ones.

SCIENCE



·       I can observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies. SC.2.L.16.1




Students will be placed in groups this week to research various kinds of animals to understand their life cycles and will present their chosen animal this Friday to the class!!!! :-)

*Please sign and return any information in your child's sign and return folder!!!

If you're having your child go to ASTROSKATE then you need to send the permission slip back along with $8.00 for the cost!!! It is due by Wednesday of this week if you're having your child go!!!

Our CLASS LIBRARY DAY IS: this Wednesday September 17th!!! Make sure your child has his/her library book in his/her back pack so he/she can get a new book unless they're still reading it, which means they can hold onto it.   YOUR CHILD CAN USE HIS/HER library book on reading log.  It's okay for your child to re-read.
