Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence Learning Goals for the Week of December 1st-5th!!

Our ELA Learning Goals:

I can ask and answer questions to gain a greater understanding of the text.

I can identify the main topic of a multi paragraph text.

I can identify various text features and use them to gain a greater understanding of the text.

Students will create visual representations of different text features that show how Theodore Roosevelt contributed to the United States as a President using play dough, chalk or clay :-)

We will act out vocabulary words such as: unusual, politics, honor, canal, strike and popular. 

We will also be learning how to take notes on important information using key words on our note taking sheet and highlighting those sections in our research information on our historical figure. :-)  This will be information we will use for our wax museum in the next few weeks!!!


Our Writing Learning Goal:
I can capitalize important people, places and geographic names.

I can summarize various important points and key details from a historical text.


Our Math learning goal:
                               I can fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.


We will create a foldable that we can use to practice a variety of strategies when solving addition and subtraction facts and word problems. 

Students also will practice finding the unknown variable by doing the opposite fact or counting on/back.

Our Science learning goals are:
I can compare and describe changing patterns in nature that repeat themselves, such as weather conditions…day to day and season to season.

Our Science vocabulary words are: 
Fall

                                                          Water Vapor
                                                          Solid, Liquid, Gas
                                                          Evaporation

                                                          Precipitation

We will experiment with how the water cycle truly works and will learn a great song to remember how the water cycle works.

    I also sang a cute song with hand motions:
    (Sang to the tune of She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain)
    Water travels in a cycle, yes it does
    (use pointer finger to make a big circle)
    Water travels in a cycle, yes it does
    (repeat finger circle)
    It goes up as evaporation
    (moves hands up to the sky
    Forms clouds as condensation
    (make a cloud overhead with arms)
    Then comes down as precipitation, yes it does!
    (sprinkle with fingers while bringing arms down in front of you)

Our Social Studies Goals are:
I can examine primary and secondary sources.
I can identify ways citizens can make a positive contribution to society.

We will explore various kinds of resources such as diariesmarriage certificates, text books, biographies, antiques, notebooks, newspapers, memoirs and many others to understand the importance of having a variety of resources especially with our research on our historical figure.


Students will be given biographies and primary resources on his/her historical figure so they can learn a variety of information.  They also will be able to see a person's point of view from that time period as a primary resource and a variety of points of view by viewing the secondary resources. 



More Reminders/Notes

*Library day is  every Wednesday!!!  Please make sure your child has his/her book read by the following Wednesday and returned that Wednesday.   Students need to keep up to date with their Reading and logging their reading on My Reading Room Rewards or on the Reading Log!!!:-)

*Holiday Gift Shop is next week!!! There was information about it sent home 12-3!!!

*We saw a wonderful play that Ridgewood High School Drama Department put on for us about holidays around the world.   It is definitely worth attending.   It's on Friday 12- 5  starting  7:00 p.m. and the others two shows are on Saturday 12-6 starting at 2:00 p.m. or a 7:00 p.m. show!!!! SO WORTH SEEING!!! :-)

Please sign your child's planner daily and send back anything that needs to be returned. :-)

Math homework needs to be completed by your child each night.  Spelling should be reviewed daily too.  It is only sometimes that I will send Vocabulary practice based on words we learned in our Reading that day!!!

*Please start brainstorming with your child what they want to wear to look like their historical figure, any pictures they want printed for their poster they're creating at school and props :-)  Our Wax Museum is in two weeks!!! Can't wait!!
