Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence Week of March 31st- April 2nd

Our Math Goal for this week: I can solve 3 digit addition and subtraction word problems and facts using a variety of strategies.

Students need to know to go next door to next place value when number is too small at the top when subtracting

We will practice subtracting 0s

400- 359=

600- 543=

300-199=

We will also practice reading word problems carefully to figure out whether we're adding or subtracting!

Students will be tested on these strategies the Monday after our long weekend!! :-)

Our Science goal:  I can identify different forms of energy and how they help the environment.

Students will be put in teams where they will research about coal, hydroelectric, solar or wind power plants.  They will create a commercial to try to get someone to use power from their plant.
Students will be tested this week on their understanding of energy and its importance.

Our ELA Goal:
I can identify how the character responds to major events and challenges within the story.
I can identify the characters' point of view within different parts of the text.
Students will be receiving homework that follows this standard.   Your child is to practice with a fiction story using his/her library book.  If your child is reading a chapter book, he/she can explain these ideas within one chapter or more.

Our Writing Goal: I can create a narrative story from a different point of view from a previously read story.

Students will be learning to use quotation marks and think in the eyes of the characters they use in their story.

Reminders:
*Library day is every Wednesday!!
*Please sign anything in please sign and return folder and return ASAP
*REPORT CARDS go home tomorrow (3-30)- Please return bottom portion of report card and envelope asap.
*NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY APRIL 3RD in observance of Good Friday!
*Happy Easter to those who celebrate! :-)
Spelling words are posted!!! Please encourage your child to practice using spelling city!!
Lastly, please have your child practice his/her power goal nightly since students are expected to be at 2R/White by end of year.  Students can't move up in Reading levels until he/she has met all the skills of the level.

Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence Learning Goals for Week of February 9th!!

ELA LEARNING GOALS:

I can identify the central message or moral of the story.

I can ask and answer questions to demonstrate my understanding of the text.

I can identify the various story elements within the story.

I can compare and contrast two similar folktales, fables or fairy tales.

Your child will be given a fable twice this week which they will have choices to choose from to read and find the central message by filling out the graphic organizer.  The other two days your child will choose a book at his/her level and will ask/answer questions (at least 4) to demonstrate his/her understanding of the text!!

Lastly, your child will create a compare/contrast essay using the stories and a venn diagram to identify the similarities and differences of the central message, characters, setting, problem, solution, etc.

Our Math Goals:
I can add and subtract two digit numbers using a variety of strategies up to 100.

I can solve unknown 2 digit balance equations or unknown word problems and find the missing variable.

Example:
There were some people at the park at the beginning of the day.  19 people left the park at noon.   18 people left the park when it closed.  How many people were at the park at the beginning of the day.
(Students know when some is at the beginning we're trying to find the total)

------ - 19 = 18
19 + 18 =

Example # 2
Dominos served 97 pizzas on Monday.  Some pizzas were served at lunch.  There were 59 pizzas served at dinner.  How many pizzas were served at lunch?

97 - ___ = 59
97 - 59=____

Balance equation examples:

98 - 19= _____ + 18

19 + 20 = 67 - ____

Students will learn they do the opposite to find the missing variable.

Our Science Learning Goals are:
I can use inquiry skills to investigate questions and generate explanations.

I can raise questions, investigate them, and make appropriate explanations based on my investigation.

Our Vocabulary:
inquiry
infer
observe
compare
measure
investigation
classify
predict
model
tools
hypothesis
conclusion
communicate
question
We will be completing our Class Science Fair project where we will be observing the states of matter using a fresh water ice cube and salt water ice cube.  We will be placing each kind of ice cube into different setting and watching how fast it changes from a solid---> liquid.  We will observe these cubes on a table and by a window. :-)  Ask your child ---> the SCIENTISTS about the experiment using the Scientific Method:-)

Our Writing Goal:
I can create a narrative writing with a detailed beginning, middle and end.
Your child has already been creating a story for the past week.   We will be editing our stories, creating our final copy, making pictures to go with our stories, having our stories laminated and they will be available for other students to read in our classroom library!!! :-)

The students are so excited to be referred to as authors!!! :-)

OTHER NOTES:

* Our Valentine Party is Friday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.   We have 19 students in our class if you include your child.  Please make sue your child just signs the valentines if he/she is participating.  Your child may bring a treat to share with the class as long as it is store bought.  If you could send any stickers or other decors for students to decorate their bags where valentines will be placed by Thursday that would be great!!! :-)  I sent a red paper about this.  If you need another copy, let me know in your child's planner.

We're in need of glue sticks, index cards , small trinket treasure box items, if anyone is willing to donate, its much appreciated

We did not make it to the library last week because of inventory!!! We're supposed to go tomorrow (2-9)   Your child will have a fable given by me tomorrow to read and find the central message anyway!! :-)

Please make sure you're signing anything that is placed in the sign and return folder.  Most of the time, it's important paperwork about your child or tests that they took.   Also, please sign your child's planner daily.

If your child could not complete his/her homework, just let me know so I know that's the case.  I have many students that just don't complete their homework and its a daily activity.  Also, if your child is working on power goal instead of reading log, please let me know.  Reading is so important.

If your child is out, please send the notes on a separate sheet of paper and not in the planner since this is documentation I need to send down to the office regarding your child's attendance.  If it's a doctor's note, it will already be on a separate sheet of paper so no need to worry!!!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK AND HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO THOSE WHO OBSERVE :-)<3

Ms. Chapin's Learning Goals Week of January 26th-30th

Our ELA goals for this week:

I can ask and answer questions to demonstrate my understanding of the text.

I can compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story

I can identify the characters, setting, problem and solution of a story.

We will be analyzing fables and folktales using these different Reading strategies.  Your child's reading logs this week will cover: asking and answering questioning and sequencing this week!! If your child is reading a non-fiction book then he/she will focus on 3 important main points.

Make sure your child is practicing his/her power goal at least a couple times during the week so we can work toward moving up to the next Reading level.

*Library day is every Wednesday unless its closed which means we would go on Thursday morning!*

Our Math learning goal is:
I can fluently add and subtract up to 100 using different strategies.

The strategies we've learned so far are:
Quick draw with addition and subtraction

*Students will draw the tens and ones.  They will regroup the ones to the tens place when adding and the tens to the ones place when subtracting.

Partial Sums
*Break apart tens and ones.  Then, add the sums together!!*

56 + 47

50 + 40= 90
6 + 7 =13
90 +13 =103

Standard Algorithm!!!
The way we learned to add and subtracting by carrying over the ten or borrowing:-)

This week:

The new strategies your child will be introduced to is decomposing and using a number line.
*I hope your child after practice with all these strategies uses the strategy that works best for he/she.
There was a strategy sheet sent home to parents on the four main strategies that were being taught.  Let me know on Dojo if you need another copy or in your child's planner.

I have some great websites listed on DOJO if you would like to use them to help with addition and subtraction with word problems or just using the digits to help with fluency.

Our Science goals for this week are:
Benchmark  SC.2.P.8.1:
Learning Goal: I can observe and measure objects in terms of their properties, including size, shape, color, weight, texture, sinking and floating.
SC.2.N.1.1:
Learning Goal: I can raise questions, investigate them and generate explanations.
SC.2.P.8.2:
Learning Goal: I can identify objects and materials as solid, liquid, or gas.
SC.2.P.8.4:
Learning Goal: I can observe and describe water in its solid, liquid and gaseous states.
We've learned that solids have a shape, have a specific volume and are atoms/molecules tightly packed together!!
Liquids take the shape of the container, have different volumes depending on how much is in the container and atoms/molecules are more loosely apart.

Gases do not have a shape, they take over the entire area and the atoms/molecules are completely spread apart.

We also have learned that buoyancy (sink/float) and weight are properties of matter.
*Students will be participating in centers where they will be measuring different properties of matter using a variety of objects, will use liquids/solids that sink and float (more mass/less mass), will learn to use rulers/measuring tape to measure size, learn some new size words such as: mammoth, new texture words, new 3-dimensional shape words and will learn to use two different kinds of scales to measure the weight of small and large objects!!

Lastly, an assessment will be given on their understanding of these properties of matter using a rock they will be given.  They will have to identify it using all the properties of matter.  After, they will have to find their rock in a pile of rocks using the properties.

YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE HIS/HER ROCK HOME AT THE END OF THE WEEK :-)

Our Writing learning goal:
I can create a story using a fable/folktale I've read using the same characters that has a different beginning, middle and end.

*I can create a narrative writing!!*

There will be various mini lessons to teach the following skills:
the writing process of indenting, capitalization, ending marks, commas and checking for run on sentences.  Your child will also learn about not using words over and over again by using a thesaurus.

Other notes:
*Math homework and Reading is due daily.   If your child practice his/her power goal please let me know.

If there is anything under return to school, please sign it and return it :-)

Also, please sign your child's planner daily!!!
