Ms. Chapin's Learning Goals Week of January 26th-30th

Our ELA goals for this week:

I can ask and answer questions to demonstrate my understanding of the text.

I can compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story

I can identify the characters, setting, problem and solution of a story.

We will be analyzing fables and folktales using these different Reading strategies.  Your child's reading logs this week will cover: asking and answering questioning and sequencing this week!! If your child is reading a non-fiction book then he/she will focus on 3 important main points.

Make sure your child is practicing his/her power goal at least a couple times during the week so we can work toward moving up to the next Reading level.

*Library day is every Wednesday unless its closed which means we would go on Thursday morning!*

Our Math learning goal is:
I can fluently add and subtract up to 100 using different strategies.

The strategies we've learned so far are:
Quick draw with addition and subtraction

*Students will draw the tens and ones.  They will regroup the ones to the tens place when adding and the tens to the ones place when subtracting.

Partial Sums
*Break apart tens and ones.  Then, add the sums together!!*

56 + 47

50 + 40= 90
6 + 7 =13
90 +13 =103

Standard Algorithm!!!
The way we learned to add and subtracting by carrying over the ten or borrowing:-)

This week:

The new strategies your child will be introduced to is decomposing and using a number line.
*I hope your child after practice with all these strategies uses the strategy that works best for he/she.
There was a strategy sheet sent home to parents on the four main strategies that were being taught.  Let me know on Dojo if you need another copy or in your child's planner.

I have some great websites listed on DOJO if you would like to use them to help with addition and subtraction with word problems or just using the digits to help with fluency.

Our Science goals for this week are:
Benchmark  SC.2.P.8.1:
Learning Goal: I can observe and measure objects in terms of their properties, including size, shape, color, weight, texture, sinking and floating.
SC.2.N.1.1:
Learning Goal: I can raise questions, investigate them and generate explanations.
SC.2.P.8.2:
Learning Goal: I can identify objects and materials as solid, liquid, or gas.
SC.2.P.8.4:
Learning Goal: I can observe and describe water in its solid, liquid and gaseous states.
We've learned that solids have a shape, have a specific volume and are atoms/molecules tightly packed together!!
Liquids take the shape of the container, have different volumes depending on how much is in the container and atoms/molecules are more loosely apart.

Gases do not have a shape, they take over the entire area and the atoms/molecules are completely spread apart.

We also have learned that buoyancy (sink/float) and weight are properties of matter.
*Students will be participating in centers where they will be measuring different properties of matter using a variety of objects, will use liquids/solids that sink and float (more mass/less mass), will learn to use rulers/measuring tape to measure size, learn some new size words such as: mammoth, new texture words, new 3-dimensional shape words and will learn to use two different kinds of scales to measure the weight of small and large objects!!

Lastly, an assessment will be given on their understanding of these properties of matter using a rock they will be given.  They will have to identify it using all the properties of matter.  After, they will have to find their rock in a pile of rocks using the properties.

YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE HIS/HER ROCK HOME AT THE END OF THE WEEK :-)

Our Writing learning goal:
I can create a story using a fable/folktale I've read using the same characters that has a different beginning, middle and end.

*I can create a narrative writing!!*

There will be various mini lessons to teach the following skills:
the writing process of indenting, capitalization, ending marks, commas and checking for run on sentences.  Your child will also learn about not using words over and over again by using a thesaurus.

Other notes:
*Math homework and Reading is due daily.   If your child practice his/her power goal please let me know.

If there is anything under return to school, please sign it and return it :-)

Also, please sign your child's planner daily!!!

Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence Week of January 12th-16th

Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence for Week of January 12th-16th!!!

Our ELA learning goals are:

I can compare and contrast two similar texts.

I can identify the main topic/point of a multi paragraph text and details.

I can identify text features within the text to better understand the text as a reader.

I can ask and answer questions within the text to retell what is happening in the text.

Our Writing Goals:

I can create a compare/contrast essay on two texts.

I have a great understanding of the writing process.

Our Math Goals:
I can fluently add and subtract up to 20.

I can fluently add and subtract within 100 using different strategies.

*We have our test on Wednesday on the first learning goal.
*On Wednesday, I will send a letter with different strategies we will be learning to add and subtract within 100s, so your child can practice these at home!!

Different strategies for adding and subtracting within 100:

1. Manipulatives (Base Ten blocks) for Place Value
2. Decompose/Breaking Apart (Making it Make Sense)

37 + 56=

37 + 3=40
       40 + 50=90
       90+3= 93

 37 + 56=

 56 + 4=60
60 + 30=90
90 + 3=93

3.  Box Method/Partial Sum (Place Value Connection)
4.  Standard Algorithm

Practice these strategies with your child:-)

Our Science Goals:

I can identify the properties and states of matter.

Other important notes:

A note was sent home about our math program dream box.  It's a great way for students to practice the Second Grade Math skills.  They enter their lunch number for user name and password!!

Your child's spelling words are practice with ui/u-e.   I posted them on the classdojo website and also stapled the words in your child's planner.   We will also practice the igh and y(i) sounds this week!!!

Also, report cards were sent home this week!!! Please sign and return so I can start setting up conferences.

Please sign your child's planner every night and also any papers under return to school folder.

Please make sure your child is completing his/her homework every night, Reading and practicing his/her power goal for their Reading level.  I can't move students up when they have not been successful in their power goal.

Library Day is every Wednesday!! Please make sure your child has his/her library books on Wednesday!
