Our Learning Goals for the Week of October 13th-17th!!!!

ELA:

We will be reading the story: Alexander Who Used To Be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Viorst and A Chair For my Mother by Vera B. Williams

I can understand that knowing the structure of the story can help with comprehending the text RL.2.5

I can understand key details to answer questions in close reading.  RL. 2.1

I can understand different points of view within the text RL. 2.7

I can use information from illustrations to better understand the characters feelings and actions. RL 2.7

Common Learning Goal: I can understand that knowing the story structure helps me at understanding the story, key details, points of view, and illustrations to better understand the character's feelings.

Students will practice these skills using comprehension discussion questions, writing short response, using sequence graphic organizers and character response graphic organizers.  I will encourage your child to practice these skills with their own on level fictional books during silent reading time using these kinds of organizers!!!   Ask your child these questions when reading at home!!

Write in your child's planner if you want a copy of this for practice with reading instead of using the Reading log.   Your child can fill these out using fiction library books or other books of their own at their level!!! Students are starting to earn more rewards for every time they read!! Make sure your child is reading for at least 10 minutes each night or when your child starts receiving his/her reading level bookmark, have your child practicing his/her words or power goal cards for the night instead!!!!

Our spelling words are listed on class dojo under your messages!!! I also have websites for practice listed on class dojo and they were also sent home on a paper in your child's homework folder!!! Words are a few from last week that students struggled and o sound words!!! :-)

Our Math goals:

I can read and write numbers to 1,000 using base ten blocks, number names, and expanded form,  

I can compare two and three digit numbers!!

Math Vocabulary: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, digit, value, dollars, cents, pennies, dimes, dollar bills, compose, decompose

(Ask your child what these words mean)

Students will practicing taking apart numbers and putting numbers together!!! We also practice adding two and threw digit numbers  245 + 122=___________     34 +22=_________

                          *Students can draw pictures of their hundreds, tens and ones to solve!!

Major practice with bundling!  20 tens= 

Make sure your child is completing his/her Math homework every night!!!

Our writing goal is: I can identify singular possessive nouns, plural possessive nouns and apostrophes and use them in my writing!!!

*Students will practice by using objects from friends desk and will practice writing sentences using singular possessive nouns!!  Students will find these kinds of nouns in the Alexander story we will be reading too!! Have your child create sentences at home like these!!

Example: 

This is Ms. Chapin's pen!!

Plural Possessive Noun: The girls' cat is black.

Contractions with apostrophes and possessive nouns and apostrophe: can not--> can't, etc!!!

Our Science Goal for this week: I can compare and contrast the basic needs of all living things, including humans and what they need for survival.

Science Vocabulary: basic needs, nutrients, soil, air, water, sunlight, space

Social Studies Goal: I can use maps and globes to locate people and places.

Essential Question: How are different types of maps similar and different?

*Your child will be creating a geography lap book this week!!! Ask your child about this!!!

Ms. Chapin's Monkey Jungle of Excellence Learnings: Week of October 6th-10th



This will be a busy week of finishing up many different units and quite a bit of testing. Our learning goals are staying pretty much the same, as we finish units in Math, ELA, and Science.


Please make sure your child is bringing in a photograph or magazine/newspaper photo to share with the class.  Your child is going to share what the photo is mainly about and some details.   We're learning about main idea in Reading so this is a great real world connection.


Also, your child will be receiving his/her first home project on Friday that will be due next Friday!!! I will send the rubric with the project!!! They're to pick a job their parent does- why the job is so important and the duties of the job?  This will help students really connect to main idea and details.  Your child will be able to bring props and other items to share to show more about the parent they chose job.  The student will be allowed to create a powerpoint, pontoons.com project, video, poster or another choice to display this information.  If you choose to have your child do a video or powerpoint/powtoons presentation, please send it to my email.  Any questions, feel free and contact me on classdojo messages or in your child's planner. :-)

There will be a lot of testing this week as a result! It is very important that students are here on time and stay the whole day. So far this school year our class has only had TWO days where we were all present, on time, and no one left early. It is extremely hard for me to make up testing with students who were absent, so let's try very hard to be here and be ready to work from 9:40 - 3:50.

We are also working on a Commercial for a Farm that we are researching. This will continue all week. Busy....busy…busy!

Our class library day is this Wednesday as always.   Please make sure your child has his/her library book that day to exchange.   Make sure your child is reading for at least 10 minutes each night.   This is our class power goal until your child starts receiving individual power goals and power words to work on at his/her READING LEVEL. :-)

Week of September 29th- October 3rd :-)

ELA

Learning Goal: I can read informational text, including text features, and identify its main topic and supporting details.

Specific Goals include:

•  I can identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
• I can explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
• I know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

So, what does this all look like for a student? Well, first we will discuss all those text features that informational text can have: bold print, italics, photographs, captions, diagrams, captions, glossaries, index, headings and subheadings, etc. Often, students ignore these features and look only at the text. However, these features help a reader understand the concepts, so we want to use them to help us! We are doing this through an informational text called "On the Farm."

Also, we will be looking at the main topic of a paragraph. The topic sentence will help us with that, as well as doing a "close read" of the text questioning what that paragraph is mostly about. This will also help us with our writing! 

In writing we are focusing on basics - using capital letters appropriately and punctuation. Plus we are looking at how to use topic sentences and temporal words (first, then, finally, last, next, etc) in our writing.

MATH  

Learning Goals:  I can use repeated patterns to count and represent numbers.

•       I can read and write numbers up to 1,000 using different forms.            
•        I can tell how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in a given number.
•        I can represent a number up to 1,000 in a variety of ways.
•     I can skip –count by 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s

These goals are similar to the last couple weeks, however we are still focusing on the hundreds place. We have been working very hard on representing a number in two different ways with base ten blocks - which students are getting quite good at! They can do this with a drawing as well. Next week, we will be comparing our numbers with a greater than, less than and equal signs between both numbers. 


For example:  47 can be drawn with 4 ten rods and 7 one blocks  (40 + 7)

                          47 can be drawn with 3 ten rods and 17 one blocks (30 + 17)
                             
                  Ask your child to show you this with a quick draw!

SCIENCE  

Learning Goals:

I can observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies. SC.2.L.16.1

We are working in teams to research the life cycle of a particular animal and making a poster showing this life cycle. Also, this week we are planting our bean plants and observing their growth!

 

Other Reminders:

Library Day is every Wednesday (tomorrow!)  Make sure your child has his/her library book in their book bag.

Please make sure you're signing your child's planner daily and signing any papers that are in the folder labeled please sign and return. 

Astro Skate field trip is right after school on Thursday.  Your child will get his/her book bag on Friday!! It will be left at school for the evening.  Be at school to pick up your child at 7 p.m.!!

Please make sure your child is reading each night for at least 10 minutes and is logging his/her reading on a reading log or in his/her Reading Room online.

Reading:

Other information: Our library day is this Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.!!!! Remind to place his/her library book in his/her bag by Tuesday night if they're done reading their book!! Please sign your child's planner every night and check your child's class dojo!! The bottom of progress reports that went home on Friday needs to be signed and returned.   If you have not signed up for conferences, I'm sending a paper home this week for dates to be picked to discuss your child's progress!! Homework: Math and Vocabulary are due every day!! Reading is to be completed at least 3 days a week for at least 10 minutes or more.  Please have your child log it on his/her Reading Room online or on a paper reading log.   If your child needs another reading log, let me know on CLASSDOJO or in planner and I will send you another one. :-) Also, anything in return to school part of your child's take home folder needs to be signed and returned!!! This is usually tests and letters of regret for behavior!! School Pictures are this Wednesday September 24th!!! There was a form for pictures sent last Wednesday!!! I can send another form if you need one, let me know. :-)  We have a school fundraiser starting this week, so check out the large envelope coming home with your child tomorrow Monday September 22nd!!
